« Je pense que les images du Fontainebleau de Morris Lapidus, dans Le Dingue du Palace de Jerry Lewis, ont été une rencontre importante de mon enfance. Bien plus tard, alors que je travaillais sur le Delano, je me suis souvent rendu sur les lieux traversés par le catastrophique Stanley.
Nuit et Brouillard de Resnais que j’ai vu très tôt m’a beaucoup impressionné ; j’y ai rencontré le mal absolu, souligné par une musique d’effroi, dont j’ai su ensuite qu’elle avait été composée par Eisler.
Mon éclectisme musical est-il l’expression de mon amour du collage, du goût de la surprise ? De Bernard Dimey aux Comedian Harmonists, de Rachmaninov aux Dead Kennedys et Dean Martin, j’aime la découverte. Avec peut-être une pensée particulière pour Django et Wilhelm Furtwängler. Cela dit, je n’ai pas encore écouté Rienzi d’une seule traite !
Si le cinéma sous toutes ses formes reste une grande source d’inspiration pour ma génération, le théâtre l’est sans doute pour moi de façon plus intime. Chéreau, Mc Burney, Castorf, Marthaler – là aussi, la multiplicité des moyens me séduit, la succession d’instants proches et distants, d’associations improbables et nécessaires.
De Chirico. Mystère et mélancolie d’une rue. Sentiment d’étrangeté d’angoisse et de nostalgie. L’élan de la jeune fille, la présence rigide de l’ombre. La vibration immobile de la chaleur qui écrase la rue. L’opposition des deux bâtiments, installés dans deux espaces différents. Au centre, le fourgon de bois, béant. Tout dans ce tableau crée à mes yeux un univers d’incertitude tranquille, où la matière cède entièrement à l’esprit. Une source d’inspiration permanente. »

 

« I think that the images of the Fontainebleau Hotel in Miami by Morris Lapidus in the Jerry Lewis movie The Bellboy represented an important encounter in my childhood. Much later, when I was working on the Delano Hotel, I often went to visit the places crossed by the catastrophic Stanley.
The movie Night and Fog by Alain Resnais, which I saw when I was very young, impressed me greatly. There I met the absolute evil, underlined by a disturbing music score, which I later discovered, was composed by Hanns Eisler.
Is my musical eclecticism an expression of my love of collage, of a taste for surprise? I enjoy the process of discovery, from Bernard Dimey to the Comedian Harmonists, from Rachmaninoff to the Dead Kennedys and to Dean Martin. With perhaps a special thought for Django Reinhardt and Wilhelm Furtwängler. Having said that, I have not listened to Rienzi without stopping once yet!
If cinema in all its forms remains for my generation a major source of inspiration, theater is without doubt a more intimate one for me. Chéreau, McBurney, Castorf, Marthaler – here, too, I am seduced by the multiplicity of means, by the succession of close and distant moments, of improbable and necessary associations.
The painting of Giorgio de Chirico Melancholy and Mystery of a Street: the feeling of strangeness, of anguish and nostalgia, the force of the young girl, the rigid presence of the shadow, the fixed vibration of the heat that flattens the street, the opposition of two buildings set up in two different spaces. In the middle, the gaping wagon of wood. In my opinion, everything in this painting creates a feeling of tranquil uncertainly, where the substance gives way entirely to the spirit. A source of permanent inspiration. »

Le clan / The clan

Il y a d’abord les amis de l’école Boulle, Vincent Lafont, Xavier Gueneau, David Toppani et tous les autres, mais aussi Fréderic Turpin ou Valerie Enlart retrouvée chez Hermès. Puis des rencontres, au sein ou grâce à l’agence Starck, devenues des amitiés irremplaçables : Kristian Gavoille, Myrto Vitart et Jean-Marc Ibos, Franck Argentin, mais aussi Cédric Sportes, parti rejoindre les grandes plaines nord-américaines. Lors du chantier du Royalton, Anda Andrei entre dans la partie. Comment ne pas tomber sous le charme de son professionnalisme, de son élégance et de son délicieux accent roumain ?
Dans la maison-atelier, les heures studieuses succèdent aux fêtes et soirées entre amis, le clan se cristallise. Les anciens compagnons sont fidèles les nouveaux le deviennent. C’est à cette période que naissent, Pierrette-Thérèse, Romane et Elvire.
Au fil des rencontres et des collaborations professionnelles le clan s’agrandit. Mario Pines, mentor et cinéphile, Jean-Luc Dubin, photographe, les graphistes Arnaud et Agnes Dejean de La Bâtie. La journaliste culinaire, Julie Andrieu ou Nicolas Chatenier sont là pour rappeler que La Table doit être centrale et de l’autre côté de l’Atlantique, Keith Nuss et Ramzi Abufaraj, que le pragmatisme est une vertu à toute épreuve. Aujourd’hui la jeune relève s’avance, Mariana Casagrande et Astrid Dieterlen.

Over meetings and professional collaborations, the clan grows up: Mario Pines, mentor and cinemagoer, Jean-Luc Dubin, photographer, the graphic designers Arnaud and Agnes Dejean de La Bâtie. The culinary journalist, Julie Andrieu or Nicolas Chatenier are there to remind that The French Meal with its sharing moments must be central. In addition, on the other side of the Atlantic, Keith Nuss and Ramzi Abufaraj remind that pragmatism is an unfailing virtue. Today the new generation moves forward with Mariana Casagrande and Astrid Dieterlen.

En nom propre / Professional activity in personal capacity

En 1993, après avoir gouté aux joies du salariat, Bruno se lance dans l’aventure de la pratique libérale et vole de ses propres ailes.
Après une expérience dans le monde de la mode à travers le réaménagement du vaisseau amiral Pierre Balmain rue François 1er à Paris, les projets d’hôtels et de restaurants se succèdent à New York, Palma de Majorque, Madrid ou Londres. En France, signalons d’abord Le jardin des Sens pour les frères Pourcel à Montpellier, réalisé avec Fréderic Turpin. Puis une longue et fructueuse collaboration s’engage avec Anne-Sophie Pic : à Valence d’abord avec l’hôtel, le restaurant gastronomique, l’épicerie et sa villa ; enfin avec le restaurant la Dame de Pic à Paris. L’hôtel Prince de Galles lui confie le réaménagement, du bar, du jardin et du restaurant gastronomique dirigé par la chef étoilée Stephanie Lequellec. L’aventure du super club La table Ronde à Paris vient compléter ce tableau. Il réalise également l’hôtel restaurant Les Avisés, au cœur de la Côte des Blancs à Avize pour Anselme Selosse, vigneron renommé.
Plus récemment, Bruno collabore durant deux ans avec le département intérieur d’Hermès. Puis, parallèlement à ses projets d’architecture intérieure, il relève deux nouveaux défis : il enseigne désormais l’architecture intérieure à l’école Camondo auprès des 2eme et 4eme années et assure la direction artistique pour deux éditeurs de meubles français.

 

In 1993, after tasting the joys of being an employee, Bruno embarked on the adventure of the liberal practice and flew with his own wings.
After an experience in the world of fashion through the refurnishing of the flagship Pierre Balmain rue François 1er in Paris, hotel and restaurant projects follow one another in New York, Palma de Mallorca, Madrid or London. In France, first we can mention Le Jardin des Sens for the Pourcel Brothers in Montpellier, realized with Fréderic Turpin. Then a long and fruitful collaboration starts with the chef Anne-Sophie Pic: in Valence first with the hotel, the gourmet restaurant, the grocery store and her villa; finally with the restaurant la Dame de Pic in Paris. The hotel Prince de Galles entrusts to him the refurnishing of the bar, the garden and the gourmet restaurant managed by the chef Stephanie Lequellec. The adventure of the super club la Table Ronde in Paris completes this picture. He carries out the hotel restaurant Les Avisés, in the heart of the Côte des Blancs in Avize for Anselme Selosse, a renowned winegrower.
More recently, Bruno collaborated for two years with the interior design department of Hermès. Then, in parallel with his projects of interior architecture, he takes up two new challenges: he now teaches interior architecture at the Camondo School in the 2nd and 4th year courses and provides artistic direction for two French furniture firms.

Starck, une longue collaboration / Starck, a long collaboration

En 1993, Bruno fonde son agence et, parallèlement à ses projets personnels, reprend la collaboration avec l’agence Starck. La route, entamée dans les années 1980 avec Ian Schrager, se poursuit la décennie suivante. S’ouvrent les hôtels Delano à Miami, Mondrian à Los Angeles, Clift à San Francisco, Hudson à New York, ainsi que le Sanderson et le Saint Martin’s Lane à Londres.
En 2005, la rencontre avec Sam Nazarian permet d’écrire un nouveau chapitre de l’histoire de l’agence avec les projets d’hôtels SLS Beverly Hills à Los Angeles, SLS South Beach à Miami, mais aussi la chaine de restaurant Katsuya ou le restaurant XIV. Le SLS Las Vegas reste la réalisation la plus imposante de cette époque avec ses 30 000m² d’espace publics, 1 800 chambres, 10 restaurants, 2 piscines, 3 night clubs et surtout son casino. « J’ai passé des mois à Sin City, côtoyant le cœur de l’Amérique et la quintessence de « l’oversized » ».
La période, essentiellement dédiée à l’hôtellerie, donne l’occasion à Bruno de sillonner de nouveaux territoires, l’Argentine pour le Faena Hotel de Buenos Aires ou encore le Brésil pour le compte de Rogerio Fasano et son Fasano Hotel de Rio de Janeiro.
Dans un tout autre registre, c’est également une fructueuse collaboration avec Benedikt Taschen qui s’amorce pour ses librairies de par le monde.

 

In 1993, Bruno founded his agency and, in parallel with these personal projects, started again the collaboration with the Starck agency. In a completely different way, he starts a fruitful collaboration with Benedikt Taschen that begins with his bookshops around the world.

Débuts / Beginnings

A la sortie de l’école Boulle, Bruno commence sa vie professionnelle au côté d’Alain Domingo et François Scali, fondateurs du groupe Nemo. Il suit également les cours d’architecture à UP6 (école nationale supérieure d’architecture de Paris La Villette) de Roland Castro, Jean Swetchine, collaborateur de Prouvé, Martin Van Treek et Pierre Joly.
Le hasard lui fait rencontrer Philippe Starck. En juin 1985, il rejoint la petite équipe établie à Montfort-l’Amaury. C’est l’époque des projets tels Nani Nani au Japon, de l’hôtel Royalton à New York ou bien du concours du mobilier urbain du parc de La Villette à Paris.
Après quatre ans passés dans la cité ravélienne, Bruno accoste quai des Célestins, à l’agence de Jean-Michel Wilmotte. Dans un environnement plus structuré, il y fait l’apprentissage des grands projets et de la commande publique. Ainsi, le Grand Louvre, le musée des Beaux-Arts à Lyon, où il est chef de projet, lui ouvrent toutes grandes les portes de la muséographie. « A Lyon, j’ai rencontré les architectes Philippe Dubois et Fabrice Mazaud ainsi que Philippe Durey, conservateur. Je comparerais notre travail à celui d’un ensemble de musique de chambre, où chacun joue sa partie en pleine harmonie avec les autres intervenants. »

 

At the end of his studies at the Boulle School, Bruno begins his professional life alongside Alain Domingo and François Scali, founders of the group Nemo. He studies Architecture at UP6 (National School of Architecture of Paris La Villette), following the lessons of Roland Castro, Jean Swetchine, collaborator of Prouvé, Martin Van Treek and Pierre Joly.
Chance makes him meet Philippe Starck. In June 1985, he joined the small team established in Montfort-l’Amaury. It is the era of projects such as the Nani Nani in Japan, the Hotel Royalton in New York or the contest of street furniture in the Parc de La Villette in Paris.
After four years spent in the city of Ravel, Bruno docked the quai des Célestins, to the agency of Jean-Michel Wilmotte. In a more structured organization, he learns about major projects and state commissions. Thus, the Grand Louvre, the Museum of Fine Arts in Lyon, where he was project manager, opened him wide the doors of museography. « In Lyon, I met the architects Philippe Dubois and Fabrice Mazaud as well as Philippe Durey, the curator. I would compare our work to that of a chamber music ensemble, where everyone plays his part in full harmony with the other players. »

Enfance / Childhood

A sept ans, Bruno, à bout de souffle, part en cure thermale à Saint-Honoré-les-Bains. Les enfants en uniforme, short bleu et chemise vichy à manches courtes, prennent des soins, alternés de promenades dans l’air vivifiant de la campagne nivernaise, sous le couvert d’une rugueuse pèlerine de laine. Les soirées se passent à confectionner des sculptures en châtaignes, dans une vaste salle aux parois ornées de fresques terrifiantes qui illustrent les contes de Perrault. Sans doute l’œuvre d’un Christian Bérard local …
La famille déménage à Massy. Les étés passent avec l’impression de n’être nulle part, dans un temps arrêté ; les premiers émois architecturaux avec la destruction d’un pachyderme des années 1930, les bâtiments de l’entreprise Vilmorin, situés au centre de la ville qui s’effondrent sous les coups des démolisseurs. C’est aussi la vision d’une modernité optimiste, avec le château d’eau, qui dresse ses lignes épurées au sommet de la ville, les barres d’habitations qui sont encore porteuses de lendemains qui chantent ; mais aussi l’immense no man’s land de la gare de triage, tous ces éléments créant un gigantesque échiquier métaphysique.

 

When he was seven years old, a breathless Bruno went on a spa cure at Saint-Honoré-les-Bains. There, children dressed in a uniform of blue shorts and short-sleeve check shirts were alternately treated with the thermal waters and taken for walks in the refreshing, fine air of the surrounding countryside of the Nièvre, covered-up in coarse woolen capes. The evenings were spent making wooden sculptures, in chestnut, in a vast hall surrounded by walls adorned with terrifying frescos illustrating the tales of Charles Perrault. Probably the work of a local Christian Bérard…
Then Bruno’s family moved to Massy close to Palaiseau. Summers passed by with the impression of being nowhere, and stuck in time. They were the first moments of architectural emotions, such as watching the demolishment of an elephantine 1930s industrial building, the Vilmorin facilities, located at the top of the city, torn down by demolition workers. It is the vision of an optimistic modernity, with the water tower standing at the top of the hill with its tapered lines, and the blocks of social housings that then still carried hope of a rosy future; but also the vast no-man’s land that was the railway marshalling yard. All of these elements created a vast metaphysical chessboard.

École Boulle / Boulle School

« Lorsque je suis arrivé à l’école, la formation était assez décalée : très riche, avec du dessin, de la peinture, de la sculpture, assez XIXe siècle d’une certaine façon… et bien sûr toutes les techniques des métiers de l’ameublement. Mais ces exercices étaient déjà un peu éloignés des réalités de la profession ».
Une façade de l’école est signée Prouvé et Laprade. Les autres bâtiments, structures métalliques de type Eiffel, sont ornés de céramiques, qui énumèrent les noms des hommes illustres de la profession. Encouragement ?
Cette période marque pour Bruno une libération. C’est la première fois qu’il s’engage de plein gré dans un cursus, porté par une vraie envie, soulevé par un élan collectif. C’est aussi la rencontre plus intime avec Paris, autrefois parcourue épisodiquement. Il l’arpente désormais au quotidien. Son contact avec le mouvement punk est intense ; il fait partie d’un groupe de rock. L’instant est à l’enthousiasme, aux découvertes, aux échanges. Et il rencontre Isabelle, qui deviendra sa femme. Questionnée sur ces années fondatrices, elle garde un silence énigmatique.
« Lorsque parfois ma mémoire se trouble et que j’ai du mal à classer la chronologie des choses je me remémore ces six années qui restent claires comme du cristal. C’est aussi le temps des amitiés indefectibles ».

 

« When I arrived at the school the teaching was quite off-set: very rich, with drawing, painting, sculpture, quite «19th century style» in a certain way… and of course all techniques linked to furnishing jobs. But these courses were already somewhat distanced from the realities of the profession ».
One of the school’s facades is the work of Jean Prouvé and Albert Laprade. The other buildings, metallic Eiffel-like structures, are adorned with ceramics that list the names of the illustrious men of the profession. Encouragement?
This is a period of liberation for Bruno. It is the first time that he engages himself with free will in a course, driven by a real desire, uplifted by a collective fervor. It is also a time when he became intimate with Paris, which he previously visited only occasionally. Now he paces up and down its streets every day. His contact with the punk music movement becomes intense; he joins a rock band. It is a moment of enthusiasm, of discoveries, of exchanges. Moreover, he meets Isabelle, who will become his wife. Questioned about these founding years, she keeps an enigmatic silence.
« Sometimes, when my memory becomes muddled and I have difficulty establishing the chronology of events, I recall these six years which remain clear as crystal. It is also the time of indestructible friendships ».

« Famiglia »

Bruno Borrione est né à Palaiseau, patrie de Joseph Bara. Faut-il attribuer sa haine de l’injustice et son goût de la liberté aux passages répétés de son landau devant la statue du héros, érigée place du Marché ? Sa famille vient du nord de l’Italie. Un arrière-grand-père, machiniste à l’Ambigu. Un grand-père tour à tour orfèvre chez Christofle, chauffeur de taxi, serrurier, conducteur de bus, ajusteur… Un arrière-grand-oncle, Bruno, guitariste, fondateur de l’orchestre Bruno Borri et son Hawaïan Quartet. Des arrière-cousins ébénistes. Emilio Torisani, grand-père maternel, boulanger communiste… qui se réfugie à l’église durant les bombardements.
Son enfance est placée dans le souvenir et la présence d’une époque d’improvisations, de retournements où l’habileté et le goût de chacun s’expriment par des voies parfois détournées. Pierre, son père, poursuit cette tradition de libre improvisation, de recherche insatiable. Passionné de musique, amateur de dessin, mécanicien accompli, sa curiosité est sans limite. L’été, il entraîne sa famille dans des voyages à travers la France et l’Europe.
« Ces années furent heureuses, nous vivions mes parents ma sœur et moi dans cette bonne humeur que nombre de famille ont connue à l’aube des années 1970 ».

 

Bruno Borrione was born in Palaiseau, just south of Paris, also the birthplace of Joseph Bara. Perhaps, Bruno’s hatred of injustice, and his love of freedom, has something to do with all the many times his pram was walked in front of the hero erected in the market square? Bruno’s family roots are in northern Italy. A great-grandfather who was a stagehand at the theater de l’Ambigu in Paris. A grandfather who was in turn a goldsmith for Cristofle, a taxi driver, a locksmith, a bus driver, a metal worker… A great granduncle, also called Bruno, who was a guitarist and founder of the music band Bruno Borri and his Hawaiian Quartet. Great cousins who were cabinetmakers. The maternal grandfather, Emilio Torrisani, was a communist and a baker… who sheltered in a church during WWII air raids.
His childhood unfolds among memories and presence of a time marked by improvisation and changing circumstances, during which each one’s skills and passions are expressed through sometimes-roundabout routes. His father Pierre follows in this tradition of free improvisation, of an insatiable quest. Impassioned by music, amateur sketch artist, accomplished mechanic, his curiosity knows no limits. During the summer, he takes his family on journeys across France and Europe.
« Those were happy years and we lived – my parents, my sister and me – that joyful mood that many families experienced during the dawn of the 1970s ».
